The Kocsis Vineyard is arguably the best Chardonnay terroir in Niagara. The 2009 vintage is more citrus and structured with lemon peel, cut green apple with phyllo pastry and a background of vanilla and custard. It has good weight through the middle palate and a seamless transition to a persistent finish.

Reviews:

"A vibrant chardonnay with mouth-watering flavours of green apples and sun-dappled orchards. Full-bodied and multi-layered." Score: 92/100

Natalie MacLean, www.nataliemaclean.com, July 7, 2012

"This is a typical Closson chardonnay - very intense and edgy, with complex marmalade, sauerkraut notes plus all kinds of sponge toffee, creamed corn, and ripe cantaloupe aromas. Its full bodied, dense, very well balanced and powerful, with loads of oak and fruit on the finish. Impressive structure and length indeed. But not mainstream chardonnay.Tasted June 2012." Score: 90 points

David Lawrason, winealign.com, June 2012

"A rich, savoury Chardonnay brimming with fresh orchard fruit and buttery pie crust. Palate boasts crunchy sea salt, dried wild herbs, apricot and fresh, but well-integrated new oak. Creamy lemon custard and tea leaf further add to the complexity of this full-bodied wine. Bright minerality and firm acidity produce a well-structured, balanced whole. Very good length. " Score: 90 points

Sara D'Amato, winealign.com, March 2012

"Closson Chase's 2009 Kocsis vineyard chardonnay is made in the usual full-blown style, with evident concentration and weight, though the freshness of the vintage is not in evidence. Flavours range from butter to caramel/crème brulée to wet wood, bees wax and orchard fruit, with oxidative floral tones emerging with aeration. The length is very good, though marred by distinct bitter notes on the finish. All in all, I find this somewhat clumsy and ill-defined, short on crispness and delineated flavour, though it will impress with its weight and concentration." Score: 88 points
